Red Meranti

Red Meranti represents a wood of world-wide commercial importance. Meranti is a trading name for a number of species from the family Dipterocarpaceae. Depending upon the color, the various species are often classified as red (sometimes dark red), light red. The grain is usually interlocked thereby allowing minimal uneven wear between growth rings. Heartwood is extremely resistant to moderately resistant with respect to preservative treatments.

Species of meranti constitute a large percentage of the total hardwood plywood. Other uses include joinery, furniture and cabinet work, moulding and millwork, flooring, and general construction. Some dark red meranti is used for decking.
